As Elliot Taylor comes to the end of his long, happy, and successful life, E.T. comes to him for their final goodbye while accepting Elliot's human life is but a small heart-beat in the entirety of E.T.'s past and future.

Elliot and family invite E.T. to spend the holidays with them. When he visits the Earth for the second time he learns much more about the world of humans, while at the same time also teaching the humans a lot. Including the actual meaning behind their holiday and history.

When Gertie can't go to visit the Planetarium due to being sick, E.T. comes to bring her on a trip to view the Universe that is far out of this world.

My personal interpretation of how and why E.T. became ill and appeared to die only to resurrect when his heart light turned on again. Based on facts of how when a star dies a new one is formed from its dust. Also based off of my own struggles with depression and heartache.
