Midge is sick after Carnegie Hall and Lenny comes to see her. AU.

When Midge gets arrested during her 1971 Carnegie Hall show, an unexpected visitor shows up to bail her out.

So here she was, for better or worse, feeling the most nervous before a gig (not a really important one, at that) than she had done for a long time. Because, apparently, he would never stop making her nervous.

The calm quiet of the room was a definite change from the usual chaos. The blue walls were certainly different from the blush pink.

At first, when he makes out the petite, dark-haired figure as he rounds the corner, he thinks that he's gone delirious. He looks up at the billboard, then sees her, one hand clutching onto her purse and the other holding her coat tight to her frame.

It's a few months post-Carnegie Hall when Midge hears Lenny is leaving town, but she's determined to find him for one last goodbye.

What happens when you're a famous comedian and word gets out that you're in a relationship with another equally famous comedian? You do an interview and photoshoot for a six-page spread in the Entertainment section of the New York Times, of course.

It feels more bizarre being inside, the clarity of focus making him consider just how out of place he was. While this lifestyle was nothing like him, it was absolutely in keeping that he should fall so fucking hard for the impossible.

There he was, real as anything, though the black of his suit risked camouflaging against the night that he was a part of, standing over the threshold of the stage door. She didn't know whether to laugh at the absurdity or be comforted by his presence, so often there when she needed it the most.

The cold night air made everything sharper as it whipped at her heels and stung her cheeks. How long had he been here?

If he was someone else, anyone else, he would have found it funny. Perhaps. Depending on the circumstances then he might have been a kinder person in this hypothetical reincarnation.

The sensible thing would be to head straight home once the club had closed its doors and she had waved all of the girls goodnight...As sensible didn't fit with the life of a comedian, and certainly not one in her position, she hailed a cab and headed in the opposite direction.
