As Margaret leaves Milton, Mrs. Thornton watches her go and considers how Mr. Hale's death and Miss Hale's rejection has affected her son.

Even the resurrection of Marlborough Mills doesn't mean things returns to normal; Margaret and John work to adjust to a new sort of life. A life that will soon be defined by their marriage. Family is a much greater challenge when it's one made between two proud people. But an altogether worthy one. The middle ground is where futures are built.

Mr Thornton couldn't quite convince himself to get back on the train, back to Milton, convinced that in kissing Margaret so openly and scandalously, he has once again lost her forever.

I recently watched North and South, and almost immediately I heard a song that made me think, what would happen if Margaret Hale had really wanted only to give John Thornton a business proposition? What if she really hadn't loved him? What if she had continued to live in Milton, but only to keep an eye on the property she now owned? This is my take on what might've happened.
